Depauw University Nature Park

Greencastle, Indiana

Kevin K. Parsons & Associates Inc. (KPA) was the master planner, designer, landscape architecture consultant, and construction inspector for the adaptive reuse of a large abandoned limestone quarry acquired by DePauw University for a new Nature Park. The quarry and adjacent land, mostly donated from Hanson Aggregates, provided approximately 500 acres of academic study and research areas, facilities for classrooms and gatherings, and a 10 mile loop system of nature trails to be used and enjoyed by university students, staff and alumni, as well as the local community.

The planning and design process included an evaluation of the existing conditions to determine the best use of the site. The first phase of construction featured an extensive trail system, trail heads, and parking facilities. Over ten miles of nature trails incorporate dramatic views and varying topography, as well as an accessible trail along an abandoned rail road bed, a rustic loop along the Big Walnut Creek, and a scenic vista loop along the high-wall rim of the quarry. A quarry trail surrounded by prairie forbs and grasses crosses the pond via a causeway and foot bridge. Bikers and hikers are able to access the park from the campus by way of a connector trail linking the two areas together. All trails begin at the activity center, which houses the park ranger office, restroom facilities, and classroom space.

The use of natural and indigenous materials and the responsible stewardship of the environment guided the overall development of the park. This project utilizes ‘green’ and sustainable design and construction practices. The Nature Park will evolve with student and faculty projects that will integrate the full spectrum of study offered at DePauw, including the arts, the sciences and technology.
