The recent design and
installation of the Continuum Sculpture, in front of the School of Veterinary
Medicine at Lynn Hall, prompted the need for new lighting and landscape
architecture to anchor and highlight this unique and symbolic evolution
of man with domesticated animal structure. KPA worked with the Purdue
Landscape Architects and the lighting consultant to fulfill the Veterinary
School’s directives.
Solutions included ‘grounding’
the concrete base of the sculpture with an acid stained concrete pad
that introduced color, texture and created a contrast to the surrounding
concrete surfaces, thus setting and grounding the sculpture on a plane
of it’s own. Plantings were designed to integrate with the existing
plantings that were to remain, and to hide the newly designed lighting
fixtures from view. Plantings were also introduced to frame, highlight,
and direct focal attention to the sculpture. Several existing trees
were removed from in front of the building to allow visibility of the
sculpture from the offices within the building, with new coniferous
columnar evergreen trees planted to reflect the building column lines
without view obstructions. Bicycle parking racks were also screened
from view behind the sculpture area, with additional perennials and
ornamental grasses introduced for color, backdrops, and seasonal interest.
